KATHMANDU, June 5: The cabinet on Friday decided to extend the tenure of eight retired Nepal Army generals, according to our correspondent Kosh Raj Koirala.

Dr Prakash Sharan Mahat, one of the ministers from the Nepali Congress, told the mediapersons after the cabinet meeting at the Prime Minister´s Office at Singha Durbar, that the cabinet decided, in principle, to extend the service tenure of the brigadier generals of the army.

This was the first meeting of the cabinet after eight new ministers were sworn-in on Thursday.

The last government headed by the Unified Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) had rejected the Army Headquarters´ proposal to extend the generals´ tenure. The Supreme Court had stayed the government decision to pension off the generals. Following the SC decision, the Army Headquarters promptly asked the generals to continue in service.
