Envoy Sharma was dragged into controversy over her reported statement that ‘Qatar is an open jail’.
On June 24, the Qatari Foreign Affairs Ministry had sought a clarification from her over her remarks. She had clarified her remarks and apologized.
On Wednesday, Qatari ambassador to Nepal had sent a formal letter to Foreign Minister Madhav Prasad Ghimire to call back Sharma saying that her controversial activities and remarks might impinge on the bilateral ties.
Earlier, UCPN (Maoist) UCPN Chairman Pushpa Kama Dahal had telephoned Sharma suggesting that she should cooperate the government´s move.
On May 9, 2012, the Baburam Bhattarai-led government had appointed her as ambassador to Qatar.
Meanwhile, the cabinet meeting also decided to recommend Foreign Secretary Arjun Bahaduar Thapa as Secretary-General of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC).
He will be appointed to the post following approval of SAARC Council of Ministers from member states.
The post of SAARC Secretary General goes to each member state of SARRC on a rotational basis in alphabetical order for a three-year term. This is the turn to Nepal to nominate the candidate as the term of the Maldives expires in March, 2014.
