KATHMANDU, Nov 4: Former Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Ramesh Kharel has urged Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) Chairperson Rabi Lamichhane to intervene in the government led by Prime Minister Balendra Shah, saying Lamichhane should now take charge of the government himself.

In a lengthy Facebook post, Kharel expressed dissatisfaction with the working style of Prime Minister Shah and his team. “Rabi ji, the time has come for you to take charge of the government yourself, not just the party, by removing this clique,” he wrote.

Kharel accused the government of using middlemen to weaken powerful state institutions. He said Prime Minister Shah and his team had exposed how the public mandate secured by a two-thirds majority and the public support following the Gen Z uprising were being undermined.

Kharel said the government’s working style was undermining the spirit of the Gen Z movement at a time when its achievements should be institutionalised. He also questioned activities directed at Nepali Congress (NC) President Gagan Thapa.

He alleged that efforts were underway to frame Thapa simply because he had questioned the government from the party’s Sanepa office. Kharel said attempts to restrict the opposition’s right to question the government were a worrying sign for democracy.

“The strongest safeguard against authoritarianism in power is an opposition that can ask questions,” he wrote. “It is not unusual for a government to be powerful in a democracy, but the voice of the opposition holding it accountable must be equally strong.”

Kharel also expressed concern over allegations that Thapa had spent Rs 180 million to secure official recognition of the Nepali Congress, as well as publicity linking the name of a Supreme Court justice to the controversy.

He said political disputes should be resolved through evidence and legal procedures, warning against using social media mobs and digital trials to declare anyone guilty.
