While three have been killed in Khotang district, two have been killed in Sindhupalchowk district by lightning strikes. In Sindhupalchok, as many as five people were injured. [break]
In Khotang, Dhakamsher Rai, 35, a resident of Patheka VDC-8 in Khotang district, and his father Mahanta Bahadur Rai, 65, were killed by a lightning strike while sleeping in their own house. In the same strike, Jaya Bahadur Rai, 48, a resident of Patheka VDC-4, who was running a shop in Dhakamsher´s house, was also killed.
Dhakamsher was the district committee vice chairman of the Ashok Rai-led Federal Socialist Party (FSP). After his death, local leaders of the FSP from Diktel, the district headquarters of Khotang, thronged his house on Tuesday to pay last respect.
According to the locals, the lightning struck Dhakamsher´s house when he was having dinner while Mahanta and Jaya Bahadur were in the shop.
In Sindhupalchowk district, Sangdorje Tamang, 23, a resident of Ramche VDC-1, was killed while he was at home on Monday evening. At the same time, another lightning strike killed Ram Kumari Tamang, 41, in Maneshwara VDC-3 of Sindhupalchowk dsitrict. Police inspector Jayashwar Rimal said both were killed on the spot.
One of the five injured is said to be in criticial condition. Maya Tamang, a resident of Mankha VDC-4 of Sindhupalchowk who had gone to her parental house in Ramche VDC-1, was badly injured in the strike. She has been brought to the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH) in Kathmandu.
Other four are now receiving treatment at a Primary Health Center in Barhabishe of Sindhupalchok. One of them, Akash Lama, has sustained injuries below his west. He cannot move his feet. The lightning has also killed three cattle in Ramche, according to the police.
