UDAYAPUR, Oct 28: Medical reform activist Dr Govinda KC is preparing to stage a hunger strike in Udayapur from Thursday, October 29, over the government’s failure to implement previous agreements on health sector reforms.
KC is expected to arrive in Gaighat, the district headquarters, by Wednesday evening. His supporters are searching for a suitable location for the hunger strike, but the venue has yet to be finalized, said Gaurishankar Udas, KC’s local representative.
Udas said the Radhakrishna Temple premises in Bokse had initially been selected at KC’s request. However, the temple management committee refused to grant permission, citing concerns about staging a hunger strike over political demands at a religious site.

Given KC’s age and forecasts of adverse weather, his supporters are now seeking a safe and suitable alternative venue, Udas said.
He added that the date of the hunger strike could be postponed if the venue was not finalized in time. If a suitable location is confirmed on Wednesday, KC plans to begin the strike the following day.
Chief District Officer Krishna Bahadur Shahi said his office had not received any information about the planned hunger strike.
KC has staged 24 hunger strikes since launching his first in 2012, demanding reforms in medical education, an end to the influence of medical mafias and improvements in the health sector. He has repeatedly resumed protests after governments failed to fully implement commitments made to persuade him to end previous hunger strikes.
KC has staged hunger strikes in Kathmandu and various districts across the country. His most recent protest took place in Dhangadhi, Kailali, in July 2026. He ended the seven-day hunger strike after reaching a seven-point agreement with the government.
However, people close to KC say the government has yet to fulfil the commitments made under that agreement, prompting him to prepare for another hunger strike in Udayapur.
