The former head of designer at Sabah has recently opened her own store, MUKU in Kupondole, where she continues to give Dhaka a new lease of life.
“These fabrics are made by own weavers here in Nepal and the results are elegant as well as refreshingly local. After my experience with Sabah Nepal, I have realized that it is my duty to explore the various design possibilities of this fabric. So, along with my other pieces, these Dhaka options are going to be a mainstay at my store,” says Shrestha, showing us the collection of various contemporary pieces made out of this traditional material.

The fabric’s presence can obviously be traced back to the initial chapters of Nepal’s history. The traditional and intricate hand woven material is valued for its artwork and natural fibers. Though always the fabric of choice for ceremonial rituals, the last couple of years have seen its popularity soar and Shrestha has played a big hand in it. At Sabah Nepal, she helped break the mold for Dhaka in terms of both design and color. The results are delightful color combinations which Shrestha likes to change every year as well as bold patterns and some really chic designs.

However, at the end of the day, the fabric is the hero. Dhaka is notoriously time consuming to make. If a weaver is working seven hours a day, s/he will probably be able to finish 10 inches of the fabric, shares Shrestha. So for a mere meter of quality Dhaka that is featured at MUKU, the weaver probably needs three to four days. This gives the design an air of exclusivity.

It is already a popular choice for special occasions among celebrities and several expats. But with MUKU, Shrestha hopes to take Dhaka’s appeal to the masses. Her collection caters to different age groups and you can also ask for customized designs.
