KATHMANDU, Oct 21: In an attempt to appease disgruntled NC leader Sher Bahadur Deuba, Nepali Congress President Sushil Koirala on Thursday sought names of the party leaders the former wants to nominate for the post of joint general secretary and the party´s departments.

But Deuba turned down the request, demanding that the controversy over the dissolution of party´s four sister wings be resolved first. But as Koirala seemed indifferent, Deuba proposed the party president to form a team, comprising equal number of leaders from the party establishment and the Deuba faction. [break]

“But Koirala rejected Deuba´s proposal,” said a leader close to Deuba.

Koirala and Deuba had held a one-on-one meeting at the latter´s residence Thursday evening.

“Koirala proposed to settle the controversy but I asked him to resolve the controversy through consensus,” Deuba told journalists in Biratnagar on Friday.

The relation between Koirala and Deuba has soured after the dissolution of Nepal Tarun Dal, Nepal Mahila Sangh, Janjati Adibasi Association and Prajatantra Senani Sangh by the establishment faction.

Deuba, who has resigned from the party´s central committee, said he would soon call a meeting of the party district presidents to discuss the “unilateral” dissolution of the party´s sister wings. He has been demanding reinstatement of the dissolved executive committees of the sister wings.

Meanwhile, Koirala has reiterated that the party´s decision to dissolve sister organizations would not be withdrawn, saying such a move would set a wrong precedent in the party.

“An institutional decision taken by the party can´t be withdrawn just because a faction is dissatisfied,” Koirala said while addressing an inaugural function of the party´s district chapter in Gorkha on Friday. “I won´t be ready for such a move.” He also said that official decisions made by the central committee would have no meaning if they are revoked under pressure from a faction.

Arguing that the sister organizations were dissolved so as to form new executive committees, he said the sister organizations were dissolved following a report prepared by the party´s general secretary.

He said he is holding discussions with Deuba over nomination of party representatives in the vacant positions.

Taking exception to reports portraying him as an autocrat, Koirala said, “These reports are baseless.” He also held Maoists´ rigid stance responsible for delay in the peace process. He urged the Maoists to not follow a dictatorial path.
