Anup K Baral heads the Passenger Car business unit at Sipradi Trading Pvt Ltd, the distributor of Tata vehicles for Nepal. Baral talked to Tapas Barsimha Thapa of Republica about the market of four-wheeler segment, Sipradi’s plans and performance and its offer for the NADA AutoShow 2009. Excerpts:

What are your expectations from the NADA AutoShow 2009?

NADA AutoShow is a platform where prospective vehicle buyers can check the products of all manufacturers at one place instead of having to go from showroom to showroom. This way they don’t have to rely on just the salesperson. They can touch and feel everything right on the spot and make a very informed decision. Nepal’s biggest festival Dashain is just around the corner. During this festive season, people want every thing new. Our performance has been pretty well in the previous auto shows and we are very optimistic about the outcomes this time around too.

We offer people multiple choices - everything from a hatchback to sedan and SUV to MUV. Our portfolio includes the Indica Xeta and the new Indica Vista, available in both petrol and diesel variants, the Indigo CS sedan; Marina station wagon in the car segment; Sumo Victa, Sumo Grande and Spacio in the MUV segment and the Safari Dicor in the SUV segment.

What offers do you have for potential buyers at event?

We have the mother of all offers for them. We are continuing with our Maha Utsav campaign offering large discounts and bumper prizes. We are also paying comprehensive insurance premium and road taxes for a year on vehicles sold by us. Likewise, we are also customizing the vehicle with basic accessories.

We are offering Rs 50,000 cash discount of Indica Vista and Sumo Victa and Rs 100,000 on Indica Xeta, Indigo, Sumo Grande and Safari. We are also offering super bumper prizes of Rs 1 million for one, four-nights-five-days holiday in Bangkok and Pattaya for five persons, two-days-four-nights trips for two to Pokhara, including paragliding, for 12 persons and gift hampers worth Rs 25,000 for 30 persons.

On top of it, we also offer an 18-month unlimited mileage warranty against manufacturing defects and four free servicings.

What do you think is Tata’s strength?

I’d say it is customers’ faith in our services. You are driving a Tata vehicle in any part of the country from Mechi to Mahakali. You feel ease driving Tata vehicles because there will be Tata Service Center just around the corner. Our after sales and spare parts network, present all over the country, has won the confidence and trust of everyone.

How has the previous year been?

We have been maintaining the market share of 25 to 30 percent every year. In the small cars segment, we have a share of 24 to 25 percent, while our share in the MUV segment is 75 percent.

We sold around 600 vehicles in the last fiscal year and we have set a target of selling 1,000 vehicles this year. Our Indica Vista was launched on June 25 and we have already managed to sell 100 units. Nepali customers are very choosy and have a wide range of choices. The fact that we have done well shows how much work we put into research before we launch our products here.
