Constitution for real change in life of Dalit community: Nepal

KATHMANDU, Aug 4: CPN (UML) leader Madhav Kumar Nepal on Tuesday stressed on the need for drafting a constitution that would bring real changes in the life of the Dalit community and women that have remained in the back burner.

Speaking at an interaction on 'New Constitution and Dalit Rights' organized by Bhagat Sarwajeet Memorial Academy here, leader Nepal termed the demands raised by the Dalit community as appropriate while explaining he remained committed towards securing the rights of the Dalit community in the constitutional form.Expressing his grief at the security forces' intervention in the sit in programme organized by the Dalit community demanding their rights in the constitution, Nepal said, "Instead of fulfilling their demands, it is not right to harass the community which has been most suppressed in the society."

On the occasion, UML Deputy General Secretary Bishnu Prasad Poudel said there was still time to embed the subjects that have not been included in the draft constitution.

UML lawmaker Jitu Gautam, UCPN (Maoist) Politburo member Bishwo Bhakta Dulal, Dalit rights activists Padam Sundash, Dr Nirmal Kumar Bishwokarma and Yekraj Bishwokarma among others pressed for Dalit-friendly constitution. RSS
