KATHMANDU, Jan 20: For the first time in the history of Nepal´s judiciary, Chief Justice Ram Prasad Shrestha on Thursday made a sudden inspection visit to the Kathmandu and Lalitpur District Courts to see if the courts have been delivering their services efficiently.

During his sudden check, Chief Justice Shrestha inquired justice seekers whether the courts were delivering their services in a hassle free manner. CJ had directly interacted with general public, while the service seekers demanded hassle free, speedy and effective justice delivery.[break]

The team led by Shrestha had made the inspection visit to Kathmandu District Court at around 11:45 and Lalitpur District Court at 12:45 noon.

The team which comprised CJ Shrestha, Chief Judge of Patan Appellate Court Keshari Raj Pandit and Deputy Registrar and Assistant Spokesperson for the Supreme Court (SC) Hemanta Rawal visited every section, department and bench of the courts.

Judges, court officials, lawyers and service seekers were surprised to see Chief Justice in-front of them. CJ had left his security guards outside as he entered the courts.

“How long have you been seeking justice?” Rawal quoted CJ as asking service seekers.

The inspection team however found no judges and officials absent in office time. “The team concentrated mostly in digging out public concerns rather than recording presence of the officials,” Rawal said, adding that the team did not come across any irregularities in the courts.

Kathmandu District Court judges and officials told CJ that the court lacked adequate space and that it had affected court proceedings. The KDC will shift to its new building in Babarmahal after the construction works are completed.
