“Every winter we introduce the newest product in our store but compared to last year price has gone up 10 to 20 percent this year because raw material prices have gone up in the international market,” said Tshering Sherpa, sales executive of Sherpa Adventure Gear at Lal Durbar Marg.
“Significant increase in customs duty followed the surge in the valuation of Bhatt (Currency of Thailand) and the combined effect has made most of the locally manufactured winter apparel expensive compared to last year,” Sherpa told Republica.
Price of raw materials likes feathers, wools, fabrics and wind-proof clothes has gone up in the international market due to strengthening of US dollar.
Last year, hard sell was worth Rs 3,100 which is now going for Rs 4,175 while soft shell which was available at around Rs 1,000 has become expensive by Rs 200 in the market. Likewise, thermal, half jacket and pullover among others have also become expensive by about Rs 500.
“Sherpa brand has been witnessing an excellent growth in demand in recent days due to growing awareness about quality among Nepali customers,” added Sherpa. Branded products are often known to be durable and more reliable than non-branded ones.
All winter clothings are manufactured by using light fabrics which make the apparel light and comfortable to wear. “Most raw materials are imported from Japan, Italy, Canada, Australia and Taiwan,” added Sherpa.
Women products are priced from Rs 2,000 and go up to Rs 24,000 whereas products for men cost Rs 3,000 to Rs 25,000. Sherpa disclosed average transaction at the store is in the range of Rs 50,000 during winter.
