Summit without Sherpas? Mountaineering faces crisis as youth exit tradition

Climbing Everest is no easy feat, it is filled with risks and challenges. It requires not just physical fitness and competitiveness but also refined skills and courage. Studies show that Tibetan and Nepali Sherpas have a genetic ability to endure low-oxygen conditions (hypoxia) at high altitudes.

KATHMANDU, April 29: The Sherpa community, known for its unique indigenous culture and deep-rooted connection with the Himalayas, has long played a crucial role in guiding mountain expeditions in Nepal and beyond. However, experts now warn of a looming shortage of Sherpa guides within the next ten years.
