KATHMANDU, Feb 13: Police have arrested Kamal Joshi, a leader of the All Nepal National Free Students Union (ANNFSU), the student wing of the ruling CPN-UML, in connection with an assault on police personnel.
Joshi was taken into custody by the District Police Range Kathmandu at around 4 PM on Thursday from New Baneshwar, Kathmandu, Spokesperson for the Police Range SP Apilraj Bohora confirmed to Republica.
The incident occurred on January 31 when police constables Jagulal Chaudhary and Nargendraraj Bista, both members of the Quick Response Team (QRT) under Durbarmarg Circle, were attacked in Thamel.
Earlier, police had arrested two individuals involved in the incident—Dinesh Sigdel of Taplejung and Ramesh Phulara of Dadeldhura—on February 9. However, Joshi remained at large despite appearing in CCTV footage, sparking criticism over the alleged leniency.
Although Joshi was seen in the footage, initial reports suggested he was trying to protect the police rather than assaulting them. However, lack of his arrest led to claims that he was being shielded due to political influence.
Amid mounting pressure, the police sought an arrest warrant from the District Administration Office, leading to his detention.
