KATHMANDU, Feb 10: Police arrested Khagendra Sunar, coordinator of the Dalit Campaign for Dalits on Monday for demanding the resignation of Minister for Home Affairs Ramesh Lekhak.

Rem Rasaili, a member of the campaign said that Sunar was arrested in front of the Parliament building in Baneshwar. He had participated in the protest demanding the resignation of Minister Lekhak.

Sunar had been protesting for the past five days against the government's passive atrocities against inter-caste married couple Satyendra Ram (Chamar) and Neha Rauniyar from Sarlahi.

During the protest, he demanded action against the Home Minister and insisted that an investigation be conducted against the police officers who obstructed inter-caste marriages and filed false cases.

Sunar said that Dalit rights activists have organized strong protests against incidents like the deployment of a team to India with police involvement to arrest the Satyendra-Neha couple, and the repeated filing of false charges against them.

Police had arrested the couple on December 24. However, the Supreme Court has already ruled in the favor of their marriage.
