Acharya highlights LDCs' concerns

KATHMANDU, Dec 2: Gyan Chandra Acharya, Nepal´s Permanent Representative to the UN, made a statement in the capacity of the Chair of the Global Coordination Bureau of the Least Developed Countries (LDCs) at the plenary of the general debate of the High Level Conference on South-South Cooperation. [break]



Speaking on behalf of the LDCs, Acharya highlighted the economic progress and vulnerabilities of the LDCs, the office of Nepal´s Permanent Mission to the UN said in a press release on Wednesday.



Acharya emphasized the need of a "comprehensive approach to intensify the broad framework of South-South cooperation," the release said. He also stressed that the ever-growing need for meaningful North-South cooperation should address "a myriad of development challenges in the South, and that the South-South and triangular cooperation was an appropriate mechanism based on solidarity and partnership among equals to realize internationally agreed development goals including MDGs."



While welcoming the recent initiatives of United Nations Specialized Agencies to establish new units and work programs to support and promote South-South cooperation, Acharya laid particular emphasis on the need for enhanced resources and sustained funding mechanism for effective implementation of South-South cooperation projects.
