KATHMANDU, April 17: Police on Thursday arrested a man who escaped the district prison in Okhaldhunga about ten years ago, where he was serving a prison term after being convicted of murder.

The arrested has been identified as Ladbir Rai, 45, originally from Thakle VDC-5 of Okhaldhunga, who was found guilty of murdering Ganda Bahadur Rai from Thakle-5 of Okhaldhunga in 2003.

Rai was convicted by the District Court Okhaldhunga on November, 18, 2003.

About three years into his jail term, Rai, along with other inmates, had escaped the prison in 2006. Rai had been living in disguise since he fled the prison. After a few years, he shifted to Shimla of India along with his wife and children and worked there as a laborer at a mine.

In Shimal, too, he was put in jail by the authorities for three years after his wife was found dead under suspicious circumstance.

Police investigations revealed that Rai stayed in India for about seven years after his escape from the Okhaldhunga prison. He returned to Nepal about two years ago and worked as a painter near the Bauddha area.

While intensifying search against convicted criminals who escaped the prison at different spans of time, a police squad deployed from the Metropolitan Police Crime Division arrested him from Tinchule of Kathmandu. Rai has been sent to Okhaldhunga District for further legal action.
