Central Newsroom of Nepal Police said the tractor (Me 1 Ta 2100), ferrying the pilgrims from the Pathivara Temple to Suketar of the district, fell some 500 meters down from the road at night.
All pilgrims were from Kathmandu.
According to the police, Renu Maharjan, an employee at Postal Office of Chabahil; Geeta Dawadi, 47, from Naikap-4, Maiya Budhathoki, 50, and Ishwori Thapa from Naikap-6 were found dead at the incident site while Gita Thapa,40, from Banepa died while receiving treatment at the district hospital of Taplejung.
A police team had rescued the injured ones. The tractor driver is under police control.
The accident occurred after one of the pilgrims mistakenly pushed the gear of the halted tractor.
Meanwhile, the Directorate of Public Relation of Nepal Army said a team of Nepal Army airlifted the injured ones to Kathmandu for treatment. Earlier, they were taken to district hospital of Taplejung.
