KATHMANDU, July 13: Only one percent of Nepali migrant workers heading to overseas job destinations are skilled, the Economic Survey for Fiscal Year 2014/15 shows.

According to the survey, 74 percent of migrant workers are unskilled, while 25 percent are semi-skilled. A total of 3.6 million Nepali workers left the country for foreign employment through both formal and informal route in 2014/15.

The country's employment growth rate stands at 2.9 percent and more than 450,000 youths enter the labor market every year, according to the survey. The survey has attributed the growing trend of workers heading abroad to dearth of employment opportunities in the country, lack of respect for workers, and growing attraction of Nepali youth toward foreign employment.

"The demand for Nepalis in Malaysia and Gulf countries is rising because of their sincerity, honesty, laborious working style and courageous reputation," the survey reads.

A total of 364,740 workers left the country for foreign employment in the first eight months of 2014/15, according to the data compiled by the Department of Foreign Employment. Among them, 6.4 percent (15,939 workers) are women.

Malaysia was the top labor receiving countries for Nepal in the review period, welcoming 152,864 Nepali workers. Similarly, Qatar, which hosted 84,911 workers, is second in the list. Saudi Arabia (67,419 workers), United Arab Emirates (37,364) and Bahrain (3,114) were the other top destinations for Nepali workers in the review period.

Meanwhile, the government has said that it has allocated a total of Rs 6 million to various Nepali embassies to rescue stranded Nepali workers. The government has provided financial assistance to the families of 115 deceased, injured/ill migrant workers and brought 364 dead bodies of the workers, according to the survey.

Likewise, the survey states that the government has sent a draft of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to the governments of Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Israel. The government has already signed such MoUs with UAE, Qatar, Japan, South Korea and Bahrain.

While the rate of Nepali workers leaving the country for overseas jobs is increasing, the government issued work permit to 877 foreigners working in Nepal in the review period. According to the survey, the government renewed work permits of 299 foreign workers in Nepal in the review period.
