The Association organized the conference so as to aid agro sector development by promoting earthworm keeping in a commercial manner. There are 4,000 kinds of earthworms in the world and four kinds in Nepal but only one type red earthworm was kept on display in the conference. [break]
Chairman of the Association Dr. Kishor Rajbhandari suggested keeping earthworms to manage garbage in Kathmandu and make fertilizer. Earthworms Specialist Dr. Ananda Shova Tamrakar said she has been keeping worms for the past twenty years and one earthworm is sold at Rs. 1 and fertilizer at Rs. 30 per kg. She also said 6-7 earthworms are produced from one egg of worm.
Long time earthworm farmer Ashok Kumar Bhattarai said he started earthworm farming by importing 100 kg of worm from India to start organic farming in Nepal.On the occasion, former minister Ganesh Shah said there is a need of earthworm farming to increase agro productivity.
