Most of the food joints are running without any license or registration. On top of this, these outlets are also found to keep the kitchens dirty. [break]
The inspection conducted in Delicious Momo Centre, Mahaboudha Momo Centre, Magic Momo, Fire House, New Capital Fast Food and Dudh Sagar at Jamal exposed that Delicious Momo Centre used chicken skin instead of meat in non-vegetarian mo:mo. Except for Delicious, all other eating joints were found operating without a license or registration.
"Almost all the food joints were found to have dirty kitchens and did not prepare the item in a proper way. It was found that the eateries also used vegetable discards in vegetable mo:mo," an officer at DoC said.
The department has asked the eating joints to present themselves at the department with all the details within seven days. "We have also asked them to clean the kitchens on a regular basis," Poudel added.
Likewise, a separate team with representatives from the Department of Food Technology and Quality Control (DFTQC), District Administration Office (DAO) and consumer rights organizations found a store in Balaju at Manamaiju selling contaminated jar water. The store was found selling a 20-liter Aqua Quality Pure mineral water produced by Real Mount Everest Beverage of Balaju that contained flies and earthworms.
The team seized the jar water from the store. However, the team was not able to take any action against the company as the owner had already fled when the team reached the plant located in Balaju. "The inspection team should have taken action against the company which was selling water containing dead insects. This is sheer negligence on the part of the authorities," Madhav Timilsana, a consumer right activist, told Republica.
Besides, the team also inspected Pushpa Dairy Farm at Balaju which was earlier sealed by the authorities after finding that the milk packets did not carry a label, mentioning batch number and expiry date and also used dirty water and substandard milk powder.
"The follow-up inspection by the department has found that the dairy farm has followed the instructions made by the department a week ago and has ensured cleanliness but the dairy farm will not be allowed to restart the business until DFTQC submits the lab report on water and powder milk," Madan Kumar Chapagain, food inspector at DFTQC, said.
