SPORTS BRIEFS: Int'l karate from Sunday

KATHMANDU, May 11: Nepal Siterio Karate Do Association is organizing the First Katsuhiko Gibo Memorial International Karate Competition from Sunday at the covered hall of the Dasharath Stadium. The two-day competition is being held on the initiative of Nepal Karate Federation. [break]



Five teams from five development regions, three departmental teams--Nepal Army, Armed Police Force and Nepal Police-- and national teams of India, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Japan are participating in the competition. Altogether 300 players are competing for 19 gold medals.



Women boxers compete today in world championship


KATHMANDU: Nepali women boxers -- Saraswati Rana and Dina Gurung -- will compete in the AIBA Women World Boxing Championship on Saturday. The event being held in Qinhuangdao, China, will also serve as the qualifiers for London Olympics. Rana from the Armed Police Force (APF) is contesting in 60 kg category and Gurung in 75 kg category. Rana will face Beta Szabo of Hungary while Gurung will lock horns with Ogoke Edith of Nigeria.
