SPORTS BRIEFS: Handball team off to Pakistan

KATHMANDU, April 16: National Handball Team left for Pakistan on Monday to participate in the Invitational Handball Championship scheduled to be held from April 20 to 27 in Faisalabad, Pakistan.



The team consists of 11 players and four officials. The players are Amar Shrestha, Bishal Basnet, Deepak Singh Bohara, Birendra Chand, Jitendra Chand, Bimal Thapa, Lokendra Chand, Surya Prakash Bhatta, Devendra Mainali, Aswin Poudel and Bimal Bhatta. Jayanta Kumar Sharma is the coach of the team. [break]



Rana, Shrestha in semis


KATHMANDU: Victory Shumsher Rana and Udaya Biswamber Shrestha advanced to the semifinals of First Citizen Bank Veterans´ Tennis Tournament in the above 65 years category winning their respective matches on Monday. In the match played at Dasharath Stadium Tennis Court, Rana defeated Singha Bahadur Basnet 8-4 and Shrestha beat Mohan Bahadur Shahi 8-5.



In the above 55 years singles, Bidur Shrestha advanced into the quarterfinal defeating Prem Shakya. In the above 45 years category, Dharma Ratna Shahi, Raju Bikram Shah, Karma Ghale, Harbind Singh, Uttam Lama, Raju Shrestha, Prithvi Thakali, Amrit Kansakar, Dhurba Gurung, Pravin Baidhya and Naresh Gurung advanced into the second round.



Table tennis players bade farewell


KATHMANDU: National table tennis players Ajay Suwal and Rakesh Maharjan were bade farewell at Lainchaur in Kathmandu on Monday. The duo will participate in the Pilipino Open Table Tennis Championship scheduled to be held in Dubai from April 26 to 29. Prior to the tournament, Suwal and Maharjan will be training at Deep Sports Table Tennis Academy, Al Karama Dubai from April 17 to 25.
