KATHMANDU, June 16: A writ petition has been filed in the Supreme Court (SC) challenging the government's decision to require national identity cards for receiving social security allowances in 28 districts.

Advocate Bimal Pokharel filed the petition, seeking to annul the Council of Ministers' decision effective from June 6. The writ petition argues that this mandate will prevent individuals without national identity cards from receiving social security allowances, instilling fear among the elderly, disabled persons, and single women reliant on these benefits.

The petition also requests an interim order to halt the implementation of this decision, citing potential serious impacts on those dependent on social security for their basic needs like food, clothing, and medicine.
