WikiLeaks release raises US embassy hackles

KATHMANDU, Nov 30: WikiLeaks´ Sunday declaration to release 2,600 cables related to Nepal in stages over the next few months has raised hackles at the US embassy.

In a statement issued by the embassy on Tuesday, US ambassador Scott H DeLisi deeply regretted and condemned the disclosure of such “confidential” information.[break]

Turning into a defensive mood, DeLisi said prior to the disclosure that diplomats´ internal reports do not represent a government´s official foreign policy.

The whistle-blower website has been claiming that it contains over a quarter million conversations between officials of 274 US embassies around the world and the State Department that date from 1966 to February 2010.

“I do believe that people of good faith recognize that diplomats´ internal reports do not represent a government´s official foreign policy,” DeLisi said in the statement.

In the statement, DeLisi said that he cannot vouch for their authenticity and that without the diplomats´ engaging in frank discussions the US would not have been able to maintain peace, security and international stability.

“I cannot vouch for the authenticity of any one of these documents,” the statement read. “Diplomats must engage in frank discussions with their colleagues, and they must be assured that these discussions will remain private. Honest dialogue-within governments and between them-is part of the basic bargain of international relations; we couldn´t maintain peace, security, and international stability without it.”

The statement also warned that the release could have serious repercussions for human rights workers, journalists, religious leaders and others.

It said, “If an anti-corruption activist shares information about official misconduct or a social worker passes along documentation of sexual violence, revealing that person´s identity could have serious repercussions: imprisonment, torture, even death.”

The statement further said the US will continue to work to strengthen its partnership with Nepal and make progress on the issues that are important for both countries.
