KATHMANDU, Nov 10: Sometimes we just don't fare well at a career or an office, and we have to quit the job and move on to suitable posts and places. Whatever your equation is with your colleagues and your boss, it's important to maintain cordial relations while leaving for better prospects.

You don't need to be the best of friends but don't leave with sour relations as soon as you get a better offer. Here are some reasons why you should quit your job in a pleasant manner.

You need references for new jobs

Future employees will always look for references from your previous office. They want to know your strengths and weaknesses from people who've already worked with you. If you quit your office in a huff then the last memory your employers have of you is a negative one and that's the image they're probably going to include in the reference.

You will probably meet your old colleagues/boss again

If you are in the same field of work, it's more than likely that you will cross paths sometime in the future. Whether it's at meetings, or networking events, or perhaps even at a new office, you might meet the same colleagues you said rude things to at the last meeting. It will be awkward to work with them again with this kind of history amongst you. You should also keep in mind the possibility that your old boss could be your new one at an office you will apply in the future. Should the last one come true then it will definitely be a difficult situation for you.

You might want to return one day

You never know what the future holds. You think you will never return to the office where you felt so undervalued. However, owing to circumstances, you might have to come back some day and face the same people again.

Other things to remember

Don't leave without working through the notice period

All offices have a notice period for employees. If you intensely dislike the place where you are working, you will convince yourself that it is okay to quit immediately. But going through the notice period means that the office will have time to look for your replacement. Quitting suddenly and immediately leaves everyone in the lurch and there will be chaos in your wake.

Finish off your tasks

Just because you handed in your resignation does not mean that you start to slack at work. Remember that you will be getting your recommendation from the same office and the same boss. Complete all your assignments before the last day. If you're unable to do that, make sure you do your best to clear up everything for your substitute and make their work easier.
