KATHMANDU, Oct 31: The impact of Cyclone Montha, which developed in the Bay of Bengal, is expected to persist in Nepal until Friday.

According to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM), Nepal’s weather will remain affected until Friday evening due to the partial influence of Montha, currently lying as a low-pressure area around Madhya Pradesh in India.

Impact of Cyclone Montha weakening

Meteorologist David Dhakal of DHM said that although Montha has weakened, its influence will bring significant rainfall in Koshi and Madhesh provinces.

“Due to the cyclone formed in the Bay of Bengal, light to moderate rainfall is likely in several parts of Koshi, Bagmati, and Lumbini provinces, as well as some areas of Gandaki, Madhesh, and Karnali provinces. Water levels in major rivers may rise, and the sky is expected to remain cloudy for a few more days,” he added.

Similarly, meteorologist Dr. Dharmaraj Upreti stated that since the cyclone’s main center is moving from Bihar toward West Bengal and Sikkim, Nepal will not face a severe threat like India. However, parts of Koshi and Madhesh provinces remain at higher risk. He noted that the outer ring of the cyclone will mostly affect eastern Nepal, where moderate to heavy rainfall is expected throughout the day, urging people to stay alert in these regions.

In addition, Nepal is currently experiencing the partial influence of a westerly wind and a low-pressure system formed in the Arabian Sea, causing generally to mostly cloudy conditions across the country.
