KATHMANDU, Oct 15: The UN World Food Program (WFP) has cut food rations from Thursday to 90,000 Bhutanese refugees living in seven camps in eastern Nepal, citing severe food and funding shortage. [break]

"We are extremely concerned about the consequences of reduced rations on the health of the refugees," Richard Ragan, WFP Country Representative in Nepal, said in a statement.

Ragan also warned that without urgent cash sources this could be the first of many ration cuts over the next few months.

The reduction will result in a daily loss of 700 kilocalories and 14 grams of protein per refugee per day. WFP normally provides bi-monthly rations of about 2,100 kilocalories per person per day in the form of rice, lentils, vegetable oil, sugar, salt and fortified wheat-soya blend.

WFP has appealed to donors for US $4 million aid to prevent additional cuts and continue feeding the refugees through to January 2010.
