SINDHUPALCHOWK/BANEPA, June 8: Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal said on Monday that his party cannot fix the number of combatants to be integrated into state security agencies. He said the number would depend on the wishes of the combatants residing in the UNMIN-monitored cantonments.

"The government must ask the combatants about their wishes. The party cannot fix the integration numbers," said Dahal while returning to Dhulikhel from Helambu on Monday. He said the wishes of all those aspiring to join the Nepal Army (NA) should be fulfilled. [break]

Dahal´s statement comes at a time when the ruling parties are demanding that the Maoists fix the number of combatants to be integrated before forming a national consensus government.

Dahal had arrived in the village of Helambu with his family on Sunday and spent last night here.

During his meeting with party cadres at Melamchi Drinking Water Project construction site, Dahal assured the cadres that the party is ascending the ladder of success and there is no need to worry, sources said. Media persons were not allowed inside the venue saying the meeting was internal and only between him and the party cadres.

Prior to this, he briefly talked to media persons and said his party would launch a decisive protest if the protracted political impasse didn´t end immediately. But he did not elaborate.

He said he wanted to spend a couple of days in Helambu but had to return after the government sent him a positive message. He told local journalists that the incumbent government would not last long. "The government has to either suppress our agitation or come to a compromise," he said.

Dahal also claimed that Maoist influence on the people has increased after his party quit the government. "We had quit the government for the sake of glory for the first time in Nepal´s history," said Dahal.

He spent last night with his family at an ordinary resort at Kakani village in Palchowk VDC, which is at a distance of 83 km from Kathmandu.

Maoist Chairman Dahal, who told journalists in Helambu that he would return to Kathmandu, however, came to Dhulikhel Mountain Resort at Khawa, Kavre district. He arrived here at 12 pm. Dahal declined to speak to media. The party leadership in the district said Dahal will spend the night at the resort.
