KATHMANDU, April 13: Counting of votes of the Free Students’ Union (FSU) election at Saraswoti Campus, Thamel, has become uncertain after university lecturer Krishna Poudel, head of the election committee formed at the campus, went out of contact Sunday.

Vote counting was expected to start Sunday evening after voting at the campus concluded in a peaceful manner by 3 p.m. The election, which was originally scheduled for March 19, was deferred till Sunday at the campus due to dispute among students´ unions.

“Counting has become uncertain as head of the election committee himself has gone out of contact from yesterday,” Surya Dhakal, candidate of FSU secretary from Nepal Students’ Union told myrepublica.com.

NSU, the student body of Nepali Congress, and All Nepal National Free Students´ Union (ANNFSU), the student wing of CPN-UML, joined hands for the FSU polls at the campus against Maoist student wing All Nepal National Independent Students´ Union - Revolutionary (ANNISU-R). Other student unions are also in fray.

“We (the joint panel of NSU and ANNFSU) are insisting that vote counting start immediately after framing a code of conduct for the counting process,” Dhakal claimed, adding, “But Poudel who wants ANNISU-R’s victory at the campus went out of contact after he sensed that our victory is certain.”

In the FSU elections held on March 19 and afterwards in several colleges across the country, the ANNFSU has established itself as the largest student body while NSU and ANNISU-R are in the second and third positions, respectively.
