Villages turning empty as locals migrate to cities

By
BAGLUNG, Aug 30: Villages in the district wear a deserted look as youths returning from abroad are gradually migrating to the cities in search of better living conditions.

Prakash Poudel of Chisti-1 has permanently migrated to Kathmandu after working in an ice-cream factory in Saudi Arabia for years. [break]His parental home in the village is in ruins with no one in the village to take care of the house.

Though Poudel is not quite happy about leaving his home, he said, “There are no youths in the village to work in the fields and there are no good schools and colleges to provide good education to children,” said Poudel.

Lekhnath Upadhayaya has left the village for good and settled down in Kathmandu after all of his three sons went to Japan for foreign employment. Like Upadhayaya, 40 other households with money earned in foreign countries have moved to the cities.

According to Lilaballav Sharma, principal of Chisti Lower Secondary School, even youths with meager income do not want to stay back in the village and work in the fields.

Land prices in the village have dropped to an all time low though those intending to sell their village properties are increasing every other day, said a teacher Riddi Poudel.
