Altogether 42 cows have already been fertilized using IVF method, which was very recently introduced in the Himalayan district, said head of the DVO, Guru Prasad Khakura. More locals are lured by the ease method, which is currently provided free of cost.[break]
"Thanks to this new scientific method that has eased our annual trouble of searching bulls for mating our cow," said Ash Bahadur Thakali of Marpha village.
A syringe full of bull´s sperm is directly injected into the cow´s reproductive organ under this method.
"This is a pilot project aimed at educating the locals about the benefits of the IVF method. We want to spread this message to nooks and corners of the district," Khakura added.
According to Khakura, it takes 12 to 18 hours to inseminate the females with sperms preserved at -196°C in liquid nitrogen.
The government has planned to expand the IVF service by providing subsidiary for the rural areas across the country as the method is helping increase productivity and improve the quality of the new breed.
Cow farming has thrived in Mustang district. Many farmers, especially in the Marpha region are making good profit by selling dairy products. There are total of 7,200 cow farmers in the district.
"In the past, we used to import milk from Pokhara, but the district is self sufficient now," said Khakural.
