Valley drainage goes haywire

KATHMANDU, July 27: Streets at some major points of the Valley were waterlogged by the torrential rain that started on Sunday night and continued till Monday afternoon. Our correspondents reported that traffic was severely affected for hours at Kumaripati and Mahapal between Mangal Bazar and Pulchowk due to poor drainage facility.



Similarly, overflowing water of Hanumante river in Bhaktapur flooded a few houses in the vicinity of the river. Likewise, streets around Maitighar Mandala, Singha Durbar and Putalisadak were also flooded after teh valley witnessed the heaviest monsoon downpour of the year.



The Meteorological and Forecasting Division put the rainfall in the Valley for the past 24 hours at a whopping 99 mm. The downpour, while falling well short of the record 177 mm of rainfall for a single day in this month in Kathmandu registered on July 23, 2002, still pushed this month´s rainfall in the Valley significantly to 233.3 mm.
