Students protest LPG price hike; Valley traffic goes haywire

KATHMANDU, Feb 13:
Students took to the streets in the capital in protest of the government’s decision to hike the price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) to Rs 2,100 per cylinder, throwing the Valley´s traffic out of gear on Wednesday.



According to Metropolitan Traffic Police Division, vehicular movement has been obstructed along the Sohrakhutte-Lainchaur-Thamel route due to students´ demonstrations outside Amrit Science College and Saraswati Campus in Lainchaur. [break]



Students have taken out a protest rally from Minbhawan obstructing traffic in the Baneshwor area. Likewise, demonstrations are being staged in other places, including Balaju, Gangabu, Basundhara, Kalimati, Boudha, Baluwatar, Swoyambhu and Soltimod, throwing traffic out of gear in those areas.



Due to demonstrations, traffic movement has also been affected in Bhagawatibahal, Naxal, Dillibazar, Chabahil, Gaushala, Thapathali, Tripureshwor, Bafal, according to the police control room. Students are preparing for more demonstrations outside other campuses.



No heavy vehicles have been allowed to enter the ring road, causing more traffic jams at entry points, including Kalanki, Chakrapath, and Tinkune. Government vehicles and those owned by public corporations are diverted to alternative routes to avoid possible attacks by students in front of campuses.



Agitating students´ bodies are holding a meeting to chalk out further protest program. Protesting students burnt tyres on the road and chanted slogans. There have been reports of demonstration against the price hike in other parts of in the country as well. [break]
