KATHMANDU, April 30: The House of Representatives (HoR) has passed a bill amending existing laws to extend the validity of driver’s licenses in Nepal from 5 years to 10 years.
The change was made by amending Section 54(3) of the Motor Vehicles and Transport Management Act, 2049, which previously stated that a driver’s license would be valid for five years. The amended provision replaces “five years” with “ten years,” meaning both new licenses and renewals will now be valid for a decade.
Restoring public faith in the government

The bill was originally introduced by former Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Dhanraj Gurung during the previous government. It was registered in the HoR on May 10, 2023, sent to the thematic committee for clause-wise discussion on August 14, 2023 and re-introduced in the parliament on April 27, 2024. The HoR passed it on Tuesday.
The bill will now proceed to the National Assembly. After its passage there, it will return to the House of Representatives and then be sent to the President for final authentication. Once certified, it will be enacted into law.
