MADRID, Sept 22: Valencia has fired coach Pako Ayestaran after the team started the season with four straight losses in the Spanish league.
The club said in a statement on Tuesday that the decision was made "after analyzing the current sporting situation and results."
The announcement came two days after Valencia lost 2-1 at Athletic Bilbao, a result that left the club in last place in the 20-team standings.
The team also lost to Las Palmas, Eibar and Real Betis.
Interim coach Salvador "Voro" Gonzalez will be in charge until a new manager is hired.
Ayestaran had been coaching Valencia since Gary Neville was fired in March. The team was in the fight against relegation last season.
Valencia's next match is Thursday at home against Alaves.
