US, Nepal Army to conduct joint exercise

KATHMANDU, September 6: The Nepal Army and U.S. Army Pacific have announced their participation in the Pacific Resilience Disaster Response Exercise & Exchange (DREE) to be held in Kathmandu from Monday.



The joint exercise will be conducted for three days. According to a statement issued by the US embassy on Friday, the joint exercise is a civil-military disaster preparedness and response initiative between the NA, the Nepal government, US Army Pacific, and the third Marine Expeditionary Force. The US embassy has said that this exercise is a follow-up to the February 2013 Table-Top Exercise led by the NA. “The exercise is a humanitarian Assistance / disaster relief exercise involving over 100 participants. The training will focus on civil-military integration, urban search & rescue techniques, engineering response, and medical assistance,” reads the statement.



“The “hands-on” activities” as stated by the embassy will involve a wide range of Nepal government, non-government organizations and in addition to International Organizations, INGOs, and others.



The US embassy has said that the exercise will also evaluate emergency response procedures at Birendra Hospital and the Kathmandu-based TU Teaching Hospital.
