Unity through uniforms

KATHMANDU, May 13: An age-old debate has been taking place among students and educational institutions alike about the implementation of uniforms.

One school of thought debunks the implementation of uniforms because they take away a student’s right to personal expression through style and fashion, whereas the other school of thought argues that a uniform is a symbol that represents an educational institution and brings about student unity.[break]

It seems as if the majority of the Nepali students prefer wearing uniforms, however, because of the decency of uniforms and because of the feeling of belonging that it engenders.

“I prefer going to a college with a uniform primarily because you don’t have to worry about what to wear the next day,” says Lily Pokharel on our Facebook page. “It also promotes unity and equality among students. And after graduation, wearing the school-uniform is one of the things you’re bound to miss,” she adds.

In Nepal, school and college uniforms also are a perfect way of dealing with social or economical strata because no matter what background students come from, they all have a common uniform.

Youngsters have the habit of flaunting money, and if a uniform system is not implemented, well, many students flaunting designer clothes tend to make other students uncomfortable.

“I definitely prefer a college with a uniform,” says Rajesh Bhandari, adding, “there are rich as well as poor students in a class, and if the college doesn’t have a system of wearing uniform, the rich will tend to show off and the poor ones can get depressed. But if a college has a uniform, all students will look the same and there will be no discrimination.”

A uniform is a symbol of representation because of its importance as part of the college. Furthermore, it helps in generating unity among its students. Students won’t have problems deciding what to wear and teachers also won’t have problems controlling what students wear.

“Uniforms tend to be decent in nature, so all those so called modern dresses and influences of fashion will also be avoided,” says Abiral Nepal on Facebook.

Nepali students seem to support uniforms, be it because of the unity it sparks among students or because of its decency. And apart from a few schools, most educational institutions in Nepal promote the uniform, and a uniformity culture that acts as a base for all Nepali students, teaching them a valuable lesson in unity.

However, the types of uniforms and the way it is worn by these students could be a different issue altogether.
