KATHMANDU, March 7: The United Nations in Nepal has been concerned by the escalation of tensions in the run-up to the local elections scheduled for May 14.
Issuing a statement on Tuesday, the UN said, “We are saddened by the loss of life and injuries that resulted from the recent violent clash in Saptari district between political party cadres and state security forces.
Stating that the violence has no place in the freedom of expression and assembly, it has called on security forces to comply with existing national and international standards while using force.
“We encourage inclusive and meaningful dialogue to create and strengthen a conducive environment for the conduct of the historical local elections. The United Nations is committed to working with all Nepalis to take the country toward a peaceful and prosperous future,” the UN said in the statement.
Meanwhile, the UN has urged the political parties to peacefully express their views while addressing mass meetings.
