KATHMANDU, Jan 13: The CPN-UML has set criteria for the selection of the candidates contesting the upcoming National Assembly (NA) election scheduled for February 7.
The 49th meeting of the party's Central Secretariat chaired by General Secretary Ishwar Pokharel has decided to pick candidates who have contributed to the party for long and those who have made special contributions in the fields of social service, culture, arts, literature, science, and technology etc in Nepal.

According to a statement issued by the party after the meeting, the party will give special consideration to ensure geographic and social balance and to experts and specialists from various areas. The meeting has decided not to field those who had earlier contested in the local, provincial or parliamentary elections as candidates in the National Assembly polls.
The meeting has also set candidate recommendation process. As per the meeting's decision, the party's Province Organization Committee Secretariat should send names of possible candidates too the party's central office by January January 19.
The party has also instructed the Province Organization Committees to train its upper house election voters on single transferable voting system.
Urges govt to help victims of cold, viral fever
The UML meeting has drawn the attention of the government to provide firewood, warm clothes and other relief materials to the people suffering from cold in various tarai districts. The party also expressed its condolences on the death of many people in the tarai by cold.
Also, the party asked the government to send medics and medicines to the districts hit by viral fever.
