KATHMANDU, May 5: The politburo members of CPN-UML criticized Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal for bypassing institutional decisions in a meeting at the party headquarters, Balku on Thursday.

“Many members said that PM Khanal´s decisions including cabinet expansion was wrong as he bypassed party´s institutional decisions," Ishwar Pokharel, UML general secretary, said after the meeting.

PM Khanal on Wednesday expanded his cabinet giving the Home Ministerial portfolio to UCPN (Maoist) against the party decision.[break]

The standing committee of the UML had earlier decided not to give the Maoists the charge of security-related ministries without first making significant progress in the constitution drafting and the peace processes.

“The prime minister’s decision is the outcome of the failure of his leadership. The decision has seriously raised question over his competence as a leader,” UML Secretary Shankar Pokharel told Republica following cabinet expansion on Wednesday.

According to sources, Khanal telephoned party General Secretary Ishwar Pokharel and asked the latter to postpone the politburo meeting slated for Thursday. But Pokharel is learnt to have declined Khanal´s instructions.
