KATHMANDU, March 18: CPN-UML lawmaker Rishikesh Pokharel has said that the government should protect the cooperative movement. For this, he proposed the formation of a robust commission empowered to investigate the misappropriation of cooperative funds.

"In order to protect the cooperative movement, the government should immediately set up an investigation commission with comprehensive authority and investigate responsibly," he said while speaking at the meeting of the House of Representatives (HoR) on Monday.

"Furthermore, they need to clarify which social cooperatives collect daily amounts and certify the source of the assets. What is the source of the accumulated assets collected by these second-class cooperatives (those collecting funds)? We need to verify that,'" stated Lawmaker Pokharel.

It is also necessary to study and identify the borrowers of the cooperatives. He said, “What types of borrowers are there? Find out whether the borrowers are among the members or from other external sectors.'"

He stated that it is necessary to amend the prevailing laws based on discussions with stakeholders to create mandatory provisions for loan recovery. He said that by doing so, solutions can be found to address cooperative-related issues.
