KHOTANG, June 2: Two students died after drowning in Sapsu river of Khotang district on Saturday.
The deceased have been identified as Alice Basnet, 19, and Bikram Bhattarai, 19, of Rupakot Majhuagadhi Municipality-4, Khalle. Both of them were overseer students at Diktel Technical Institute.
The incident took place during a tour organized by the institute for its students.
Two of them decided to swim in the river but unfortunately got drowned, according to police inspector Keshav Kumar Katwal of the District Police Office (DPO), Khotang.
The students were taken to Sapsu Kalika Hydropower for practical exams. Three students had gone to the river after having lunch and later decided to go for swimming. As stated by the third student, Bhattarai first got drowned in the river after which Basnet jumped to save him. But he too drowned.
The third student then informed the teachers and other friends about the incident. By the time others reached the incident site, both the students had lost their lives.
Bhattarai's dead body was floating on the river while police and the locals had to spend around two hours to find the body of Basnet. After collecting all the details, police sent the dead bodies to the District Hospital for postmortem. Inspector Katwal added that investigation is underway to find out further details. Altogether 35 students had gone to the hydropower plant for the practical exam.
