Banarasi Dhobi, 35, died when the machine exploded while he was working at SM Plywood Factory. Sujata Salmani, 24, who lived in a rented room in a house nearby, was killed after the boil steam box was blown away and fell over the house of one Dinesh Pathak around 400 meters away. Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Udaya Kumar Tamang said Salmani was crushed by the steam box that fell on her smashing the roof. [break]
Eight persons including Salmani´s mother-in-law Parvati, 40, sisters-in-law Laxmi, 20, Sony, 16, and Sapana were injured in the incident. Among the injured, Shatrughan Pathak of Baharaich, India and Jabir Gudiya of Piprahawa-4, Tankapasheri are in a critical condition and have been referred to Lucknow for treatment by Nepalgunj Medical College. Mosma Kushbadhiya, who had returned to her parental home near the factory for her sister´s wedding, and Sibas Chhat have returned home after treatment.
“My parental home has been destroyed while I received injuries,” said Kushbadhiya. The thatched hut of the Kushbadhiyas has been destroyed in the resulting fire.
Meanwhile, locals have demanded that the factory be removed from the residential area and the victims be provided compensation. They blocked the Nepalgunj-Gulariya section of the highway for an hour as the factory owners didn´t come into contact after the incident.
