KATHMANDU, May 6: Tribhuvan University (TU) reopened on Wednesday and regular examination related works resumed after the Maoist student wing withdrew its protests against hike in exam fees. [break]
Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Madhav Sharma said exam related works such as collection of examination forms began normally at the Office of the Controller of Examination at Balkhu and all campuses across the country.
The TU Executive Council on April 1 had hiked examination fees as per the recommendations made by a nine-member team to improve examination system in the university. The ANNISU-R padlocked the offices of examination controller, rector and the vice chancellor, demanding that the TU revoked the decision.
The ANNISU-R agreed to withdraw the protests during a meeting among TU officials and representatives of various student unions on Tuesday. The decision came in view of the TU convocation ceremony scheduled to be held on Friday.
TU examination Controller Daya Nanda Bajracharya said there has been agreement to revise late fee and fee for center change and subject change. However, both the TU authorities and the student unions have reached an understanding to keep the examination fee unchanged. "Among others, the student unions have also agreed to revise tuition fee in the TU," he added.
The tuition fee in the country´s oldest university has not been revised for the past 18 years due to protests from students´ unions. Likewise, the examination fee was last revised in 2001.
The row between the students and the university authorities over examination fee worsened further after the agitating students smeared soot on the faces of TU Vice Chancellor and Rector on April 22. Meanwhile, police freed 22 Maoist students who were arrested for the soot-smearing incident.
