Transparency and accountability of INGOs

The issue of transparency and accountability of INGOs has been controversial since long.INGOs have failed to live up to the expectations of the people in general, let alone maintaining financial transparency.

Recently, the works performed by INGOs during the devastating earthquake has publically raised a question about their accountability.

For instance, WFP sent a set of expired food stuff as relief materials in many places. This news hit the headlines in the main stream media, creating controversial discourse against the UN. However, this is only a tip of the iceberg over many anomalies on the part of the INGOs, raising questions on their integrity.

On the other hand, we cannot ignore the changes brought by the INGOs in the society for which they should be credited openly.

As regards to creating more transparency and putting their financial transaction under Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB), I think, this will do away with the monopoly of INGOs to a greater extent. If the financial transaction is brought under government scrutiny, the INGOs will be held more accountable, minimizing financial anomalies. Putting the financial transaction under NRB will control financial embezzlement, even though it does not bring down to the expected level.

To conclude, an integrated action is a must at the local level to look after their works to maintain their financial transparency and accountability.
