Tourist arrivals down 2.1 percent

KATHMANDU, April 2: Tourist arrivals to Nepal via declined by 2.1 percent in March compared to the figures of the same month last year.



According to statistics released by Immigration Office at Tribhuvan International Airport, Nepal welcomed a total of 62,442 foreign tourists during the month, down from 63,799 recorded in March, 2012.[break]



Arrivals from SAARC region declined by 33.08 percent during the month as number of tourists from all SAARC countries declined during the month. Number of Indian tourists went down by (-37.3 percent) in March.



However, arrivals from Asia (other than SAARC region) registered growth of 20.4 percent helped rise in the number of tourists from China up (+35.7 percent), Japan (+6.9 percent, Malaysia (+122.3 percent) and Singapore (+3 percent). SAARC region observed negative growths from all the markets said a press statement issued by Nepal Tourism Board.



Similarly, tourist arrivals from European region increased by 1.2 percent due to rise in arrivals from major markets like the United Kingdom (21 percent), France (18.6 percent) and the Netherlands (8.3 percent). Arrivals from Germany, Switzerland and Spain, however, were down by 12.9 percent, 48.8 percent and 30.1 percent, respectively.



Nepal also recorded rise in the number of tourists from Australia (66.6 percent), New Zealand (26.4 percent), Canada (25.5 percent) and USA (17 percent).



The country welcomed a total of 142,895 foreign tourists over the first three months of 2013, down from 148,546 recorded in the same period of 2012, according to a statement issued by Nepal Tourism Board (NTB).
