KATHMANDU, Dec 31: Every year, on the day of Poush Shukla Pratipada, the Tol Lhosar festival is celebrated in the mountainous regions of Humla, Jumla, Dolpa, Mugu, and Manang.
Tol Lhosar is considered the oldest festival. The term "Tol" is believed to mean "time cycle," and therefore, this festival is also known as the time cycle ‘Samvatsar’. The festival is celebrated in the same manner as the Sonam Lhosar, which is observed by the Tamang community. Although the manner in which Sonam Lhosar and Tol Lhosar are celebrated is similar, the dates differ. The Tamang community celebrates this festival a month later, on the day of Magh Shukla Pratipada. Tol Lhosar is still celebrated in some places in Bhutan and Tibet. The word "Lho" means year, and "Sar" means new.
