Tibet quake impact: China temporarily suspends Mt Everest observation from its territory

China has suspended observation of the scenic areas of Mount Everest from its territory following the strong earthquake that occurred at 6:50 am on Tuesday.

KATHMANDU, Jan 7: China has suspended observation of the scenic areas of Mount Everest from its territory following the strong earthquake that occurred at 6:50 am on Tuesday. According to Chinese media Xinhua, observations of Mount Everest have been temporarily halted.


The earthquake, with a magnitude of 7.1 on the Richter scale, struck Dingri County in Tibet, China. The Chinese measurement center has measured 6.8 on the Richter scale.

The Dingri region is also the base camp of the highest peak, Mount Everest. According to the Chinese media, both tourists and officials were safe when the earthquake occurred. According to the Dingri Culture and Tourism Bureau, no damage has been reported to the hotels and the buildings in the surrounding area.


The Qomolangma Station for Atmospheric and Environmental Research of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, located in Dingri, has been closed. Similarly, the electricity supply in that area has also been affected.


So far 53 people have been confirmed dead in China and 62 injured during the earthquake.
