Earlier on, PM Khanal, apparently in his bid to placate criticism from opposition parties and a section of leaders from his own party against his move to reshuffle the cabinet, had announced that he would resign on August 13 if no concrete progress is made in the peace process. [break]
PM Khanal is expected to put in papers if the top leaders fail to reach consensus on resolving outstanding issues of the peace process in today’s meeting.
“That whether the PM will resign or not largely depends on how Maoist and NC leaders will present themselves in the meeting,” said Minister Ghanashyam Bhusal..
“If consensus is forged [among them] then things will move ahead accordingly. Otherwise, the PM will resign,” Bhusal, who is close to PM Khanal, added.
Echoing Minister Bhusal, the PM’s press advisor Surya Thapa said PM Khanal will step down if the meeting fails to come up with any breakthrough on building national consensus.
Thapa also said the PM will try his best to forge consensus till the last moment. However if the leaders fail to make any breakthrough, there will be no option left for the PM other than tendering his resignation, Thapa added.
