Their love runs deep, but cultural and religious differences keep surfacing between them, and the question of marriage becomes a recurring point of friction rather than a settled matter. What follows from there is best left for readers to discover on their own; the novel takes its sharpest turn soon after, and revealing it here would cost the book its most effective stretch.
The novel spans 309 pages across 66 chapters and splits into two distinct parts. The first justifies the title outright: it is the story of how a noble household is brought all the way down to the ground. The second turns its attention inward, tracking the change that has already begun in Gaurav.
